Our take for buyers

Navan, formerly TripActions, is a travel-first platform with a bundled expense module. It is rebranded under the Navan name since 2023. The Business tier suits companies up to 300 employees with heavy travel, and Enterprise covers larger ones. G2 rates it 4.7 out of 5 across 9,517 reviews, a large sample that makes the rating hard to dismiss. Expect to ask about security terms yourself.

Shortlist it if travel is your core need and you would like expense in the same tool. Be careful if you want expense only. The product started with travel, and expense is an add-on module. Navan's pricing page does not mention SSO or contract terms, so a security-minded buyer should treat those as open questions and put them to the vendor before shortlisting. Expect to ask about contract length too.

What is Navan?

Travel-first platform (formerly TripActions) with a bundled expense module, free for companies up to 300 employees on the Business tier. Travel-heavy companies up to 300 employees can use the Business tier free, with the first five expensing users at no charge and $15 per user after that. What to test in a Navan demo or trial

Test travel booking first, since it is the core: book a realistic trip, check policy rules and approval workflows, and call the 24/7 support agents with an issue. Then test expense: receipt scanning, expense approvals and reimbursements. Navan connects existing corporate or business cards, but card issuance is not described, so ask about it. Check the accounting side too, since Navan says it integrates with most ERPs and 30+ HRIS systems. Confirm your own ERP is covered.

Questions to ask Navan before you sign

These are the points Navan's public pages leave open. Get the answers in writing before procurement signs off.

  1. Which plan includes SAML SSO, and what does it cost for our seat count?
  2. Is SCIM provisioning included, or a paid add-on?
  3. Which plan includes audit logs, and how long are they kept?
  4. Where is our data stored, and can we choose the region?
  5. Can we sign your standard DPA without changes?
  6. Is there a monthly option, and what are the cancellation and renewal terms?
  7. What will the price be at renewal, and is the increase capped?

Things to know before a demo

  • Expense is free only for the first 5 monthly expensing users; FAQ lists $15 per user per month after that.
  • Free Business tier capped at companies with 300 or fewer employees.
  • Pricing page does not mention SSO or contract terms.
  • Originally a travel product; expense is an add-on module.
