Best Vendor Risk Management Software for 2026: 13 tools compared for buyers

Choosing the best vendor risk management software means deciding how you want to find out whether a supplier is safe: questionnaires, outside-in security ratings, expert reviews or a compliance platform you already use. This page covers fourteen tools for security teams, compliance leads and procurement buyers who need to assess third parties and show auditors what they did.

The tools were compared on fit for a given program, assessment and monitoring features, evidence handling, workflow, ease of use and how clearly pricing is published. The page also lists what each vendor states about security, admin controls and contract terms, which you should check before vendors' sensitive documents are stored there.

What is vendor risk management software?

Vendor risk management software helps a company judge and track the risk that comes from the third parties it depends on. It sends security and compliance questionnaires, collects evidence such as SOC 2 reports, scores each vendor, and watches for changes after onboarding. Security, compliance and procurement teams use it to decide which suppliers are acceptable, to schedule reassessments and to track fixes. Core capabilities are assessments, continuous monitoring, evidence review, vendor tiering, framework mapping and remediation workflow. The category is also called third-party risk management.

1

Best for board-level vendor reporting

SecurityScorecard

Outside-in security ratings platform used to monitor vendors and your own attack surface continuously.

Useful when a board or insurer wants a single score for reporting on vendors and your own exposed assets. It scans internet-facing systems rather than collecting evidence. Reviewers warn that shared hosting providers can drag a vendor's score down, the dashboard can lag, and small budgets will struggle.

Security teams that want outside-in continuous monitoring of many vendors.

Key features

Continuous monitoring
Core product: scans internet-facing assets and scores them.

Pros

  • Continuous monitoring and vendor visibility.
  • Responsive support.
  • Likelihood reports help anticipate attacks.

Cons

  • Score can be hurt by shared hosting providers.
  • Dashboard can lag.
  • Cost for small organizations.

What to look for in vendor risk management software

Start with the kind of evidence your program relies on. Some teams lean on questionnaires and uploaded reports, others on outside-in ratings, and regulated firms may need expert review and framework mapping. Then compare the seven areas below, from assessments to pricing. Ask security, compliance and procurement to review the same demo, and test the tool with two real vendors, including one that is slow to respond to questionnaires.

Questionnaires / assessments

Assessments are the questionnaires and requests you send to vendors to learn about their controls. Strong tools offer standard templates, custom questions, automated reminders and the option to reuse earlier answers. Weak ones leave you building forms by hand. Ask to see how a vendor receives, completes and returns a questionnaire, since slow vendor response is a common bottleneck.

  • OneTrust: Automated supplier risk assessment workflows.
  • Vanta: AI questionnaire automation: 25/yr on Plus, 144/yr on Professional.
  • ProcessUnity: Standardized questionnaires with automated workflow and dynamic risk scoring.
  • Venminder: Questionnaires plus Vendiligence outsourced control assessments; over 30,000 risk-rated assessments a year (vendor claim)
  • Panorays: Automated questionnaires.

Continuous monitoring

Continuous monitoring watches vendors after onboarding so you notice problems between yearly reviews. Some tools use outside-in scans of internet-facing assets, others add financial, news, sanctions or privacy signals, and some rely on integrations with rating providers. Check which signals are native, which come from partners, and whether alerts route to the right owner.

  • SecurityScorecard: Core product: scans internet-facing assets and scores them.
  • OneTrust: Via integrations with security-rating vendors (BitSight, UpGuard, Recorded Future, RiskRecon)
  • Vanta: Continuous vendor risk monitoring sold as add-on.
  • ProcessUnity: Via integrations with external intelligence sources.
  • Venminder: Venmonitor: cyber, business health, financial viability, privacy, ESG.

Evidence review (AI)

Evidence review is how the tool handles documents such as SOC 2 reports, policies and certificates. Newer products use AI to read answers and flag gaps, while some services use human experts to rate the vendor. Ask what the AI does, how results are checked and whether reviewers can override a score, since this feeds your audit trail.

  • Vanta: AI-powered security reviews sold as add-on.
  • ProcessUnity: AI-assisted evidence analysis described.
  • Venminder: Experts review vendor documents and give risk ratings (Vendiligence)
  • Drata: Agentic scoring, evidence collection and follow-up (vendor description)
  • Secureframe: Comply AI for VRM (introduced 2024)

Vendor tiering

Tiering sorts vendors by how critical they are and how much data or access they hold, so your effort goes to the riskiest ones. Strong tools score inherent risk first, then residual risk after controls, and allow custom rules. Check that tiers drive assessment depth and reassessment timing, rather than acting only as labels.

  • Vanta: Vendor inventory; tiering detail not confirmed by the vendor.
  • ProcessUnity: Dynamic risk-based vendor tiering.
  • Panorays: Inherent risk assessment up front (per Globes)
  • Drata: Inherent and residual risk scoring, custom risk rules.
  • Secureframe: Risk level based on data and environments vendor accesses.

Framework coverage

Framework coverage shows which standards the tool maps to, such as SOC 2, ISO 27001, NIST, GDPR, HIPAA or DORA. This matters when auditors or regulators ask how you assess third parties. Compare the frameworks you must follow with the ones each tool names, and ask whether mappings are built in or must be configured.

  • Vanta: SOC 2, ISO 27001, GDPR, HIPAA, HITRUST, NIST AI RMF, ISO 42001, custom.
  • ProcessUnity: DORA, NIST, ISO 27001, SOC 2, GDPR, HIPAA, APRA CPS 230 cited.
  • Drata: SOC 2, ISO 27001, HIPAA, GDPR, Cyber Essentials; also DORA, FedRAMP, CMMC, ISO 42001 listed.
  • Secureframe: Platform covers SOC 2 and ISO 27001 among others; VRM framework mapping not confirmed by the vendor.
  • Gatekeeper: Company badges: GDPR, ISO 9001, SOC 2 Type 2, DORA.

Remediation workflow

Workflow covers what happens after a finding: assigning remediation, tracking approvals, scheduling reassessments and keeping a register of decisions. Strong tools keep the vendor, the issue and the owner in one place with reminders. Limited remediation tools leave teams chasing fixes by email, so ask to see a finding followed to closure.

  • OneTrust: Automated workflows across supplier due diligence lifecycle.
  • Vanta: Vendors page on all plans; TPRM REST API is an add-on.
  • ProcessUnity: Automated distribution, approvals, reassessment scheduling, remediation.
  • Venminder: Vendor lifecycle workflow.
  • Panorays: Covers remediation (per Globes)

Pricing / add-on

Most vendors in this category quote prices, and the price often depends on the number of vendors, modules and assessments. Compliance platforms may sell vendor risk as an add-on, and rating tools may license monitoring and assessment separately. Ask for a quote that lists every module you need and compare it with your real vendor count.

  • SecurityScorecard: Quote only.
  • OneTrust: Custom quote.
  • Vanta: Quote-based; TPRM features are add-ons.
  • ProcessUnity: Quote only.
  • Venminder: Quote only.

Vendor risk evaluation criteria

Use these criteria as a demo checklist. For each one, the notes below describe how to test it with a real vendor from your list, what a weak implementation looks like and what to ask the seller. Run the same pilot in each shortlisted tool: assess one critical and one low-risk vendor, review evidence, log a finding and produce the report your auditor or customer would ask for.

  1. Questionnaires / assessments

Send a real questionnaire to a friendly vendor and see how the vendor experiences it. Good tools offer standard templates such as SIG and custom ones, with scoring and reminders. Weak tools offer static forms. Ask how templates are maintained and whether vendors must log in to respond.

  2. Continuous monitoring

Ask what data sources produce the ratings, how often they refresh and how disputes are handled. Bitsight and SecurityScorecard are built around outside-in monitoring, while others treat it as a module. Test a few vendors you know well and see whether the findings match reality.

  3. Evidence review (AI)

Upload a real SOC 2 report and see what the tool extracts and flags. Ask how AI output is reviewed by a person, how accuracy is measured and where documents are processed. Drata lists Agentic TPRM Assessment on Enterprise, so confirm which plan includes it.

  4. Vendor tiering

Define your own tiers, such as critical, high and low, and check whether the tool can drive different assessment scopes from them. Good tools automate scoping from data access or spend. Ask how tier changes affect reassessment frequency and who gets notified.

  5. Framework coverage

Match the tool against the frameworks your customers and auditors ask about, such as SOC 2, ISO 27001 and GDPR. Ask for mapping documentation and whether custom frameworks are supported. Venminder targets banks and credit unions, so industry-specific needs matter too.

  6. Remediation workflow

Log a finding, assign it, set a due date and escalate it. Strong workflow tools keep an audit trail and link findings to assessments and contracts. Ask about ticketing integrations, reporting for management and what happens when a vendor does not respond.

  7. Pricing / add-on

Ask for a written quote with every module you need, and learn how the fee changes with vendor count. Vendor risk is often a module of a larger platform, so ask what is included, what is an add-on and what the renewal terms are. Most vendors in this list quote only after a demo.

Questions to ask vendor risk management vendors

A vendor risk tool will hold sensitive information about your suppliers and your own security posture, so the sales call should cover data handling and contract terms as well as features. These questions focus on security, scope, evidence handling and exit, and should produce written answers you can compare. Put important commitments in the order form or security addendum instead of relying on the demo.

  1. Which of your own security certifications can you share?

Ask for your own SOC 2 or ISO 27001 report, pen test summary and subprocessor list. A vendor risk tool should pass your own assessment.

  2. Where is our data stored and who can access it?

Ask about hosting regions, encryption and support staff access. UpGuard lists data residency under Premium Assurance on Enterprise tiers at extra cost, so confirm availability.

  3. Which SSO and admin features are on our plan?

UpGuard and Gatekeeper list SSO on all plans, and Drata includes it across compliance tiers, while others do not state it. Ask for plan-level detail on SSO, roles and audit logs.

  4. What counts toward our vendor limit and monitoring fee?

Ask whether pricing counts all vendors, only monitored ones or only assessed ones. This question decides how the contract scales.

  5. How is AI used on our evidence and documents?

Ask which model processes documents, whether your data trains it, how humans verify results and how errors are handled.

  6. What is the term, and how do we exit?

Ask about contract length, renewal terms, data export formats and deletion timelines. OneTrust, for example, lists a full subscription term commitment with no monthly plan.

How to run the decision

Run the decision as a pilot with your own vendors. Define your tiers, frameworks and reporting needs first, shortlist two or three tools and test questionnaires, evidence review and remediation on real suppliers. Involve security, procurement and legal, get plan-level SSO, data location and AI handling answers in writing, and confirm exit and data export terms before you sign.

Our recommendation

Pick the approach that fits your program: ratings-led monitoring for security teams, a compliance platform add-on if you already use one, or a questionnaire and workflow platform for regulated firms. Test the tool on real vendors, check which features are add-ons and confirm security and contract terms with the vendor. Then agree early who owns reassessment so the tool keeps being used.

It is software that assesses and monitors the security, compliance and financial risk of the third parties a company relies on. It sends questionnaires, collects evidence, scores vendors, tracks fixes and, in many products, monitors vendors continuously after onboarding.

What is the difference between vendor risk management and third-party risk management?

In practice the two names describe one discipline, so do not let wording drive your shortlist. Vendor risk management tends to mean suppliers and software providers. Third-party risk management stretches to partners, contractors and other outside parties. Nearly every tool here handles both.

How do you assess the security of a SaaS vendor?

Combine a questionnaire, review of evidence such as a SOC 2 report or ISO 27001 certificate, and outside-in monitoring. Tier the vendor by the data it will access, record findings and follow up on fixes. Software helps by standardizing each step and keeping records.

What features should vendor risk management software have?

Look for questionnaire templates, evidence collection, vendor tiering, framework mapping, continuous monitoring, remediation tracking and reporting. Check integrations with your ticketing and identity systems and confirm which of these features are included in the plan you would buy.

Which vendor risk tools are suited to small teams?

UpGuard publishes entry pricing, and Vanta, Drata and Secureframe suit companies already buying compliance automation. Others sell on quote and target larger programs. Small teams should check minimum vendor counts, add-on costs and whether a free trial is offered.

Which vendor risk management software include SSO below the enterprise plan?

Secureframe (Complete plan and up (SSO and SCIM connections listed under Complete)); UpGuard (All plans). The other tools either reserve SAML SSO for their top tier or do not say on their public pages.
