Jitsi Meet review (2026): features, pros and cons, and what to check before you buy
Open-source video meeting software you can self-host, or use via the free meet.jit.si and 8x8's JaaS hosted service.
Our take for buyers
Jitsi Meet suits teams that want to self-host video and keep control of where data lives. It is open source, and Jitsi is a trademark of 8x8, Inc., whose hosted commercial version is JaaS. G2 shows 4.3 from 229 reviews. Self-hosting removes third-party trust, but it moves security and uptime to your own team. Rooms are ephemeral, so check how you will control who joins before rolling it out.
It is not a fit for buyers who want managed admin, SSO and support without running servers, or regulated teams that need vendor compliance certificates, since none were found. Shortlist it only if you have IT capacity to operate it, or if you plan to use JaaS and can get its terms in writing.

Security, admin and compliance
Transport uses DTLS-SRTP, and optional end-to-end encryption works in Chromium 83+ and Electron but excludes chat and polls. Jitsi's own page says E2EE offers less value today. What to test in a Jitsi Meet demo or trial
Test it the way you would run it. Stand up a self-hosted instance and check authentication setup, since the Jitsi security page says authentication is configurable. Join a room from a second account and confirm who can enter: rooms are ephemeral, anyone with the room name can join, and on meet.jit.si all users are moderators. Try end-to-end encryption and confirm it covers audio, video and screen share but not chat or polls. If you plan to use JaaS, test recordings and transcriptions, and ask what happens to cloud recordings, which meet.jit.si deletes if not uploaded to Dropbox within 24 hours.
